/biden team you'll get another four years like the last four years with the romney/ryan team, a real recovery with more jobs for everybody. >> now politico is reporting today that ann romney and tagg his son, one of his sons did an intervention to try to save the campaign if you will and let mitt be mitt and get the candidate to talk more about himself, talk more emotionally to give the foreign policy speech. in pushing back against some of the staff. can you help us out on that? what is the -- your perspective about it? >> i saw the story. it's a silly little story. there's no truth to it. we're focused on big things. yesterday the governor gave a speech where he talked about some of the very real foreign policy challenges facing us. he talked about building 15 ships a year so we can build up our navy. he talked about the importance of reforming our foreign assistance and linking it to positive outcomes. he talked about stopping iran's reckless pursuit for a nuclear weapon. these are the issues and the challenges that we're focused on. we're not distracted by some of the nonsense stories tha

need to start. governor romney and congressman ryan want to see what we have today and how we can build upon that. especially so that we are not taxing the american people more than we already are. the fact that the supreme court saw obamacare as a tax is an issue for me as it is for most republicans. i would like to see people work together to create a solution where people have health care. governor romney has never said he does not want every american to have health care. it wants a good solution. he does not want to do anything until he has found the right way to do it. he does not want to have to do something three years down the road to repair its. >> where will you watch tonight? >> are campaign headquarters are just a few steps away. we are going to watch on tv. we will be cheering and shouting and discussing the debate as it is going on. i think i will be with my team. >> that is the advantage, you actually get to share our make noise or clap while the people there cannot do that. thank you very much for spending time with c-span. we appreciate it. >> thank you so much. >> benj

, comparing with that of romney and ryan. steve. >> so romney and ryan do have somewhat different plans. we talked a lot in the debate last week about taxes. this is the spending side of the equation. to kind of lay out apropos conversations we had earlier in the show about what ryan and romney each believe about spending, let's start with kind of an overview of where the three people would like to bring spending over the next ten years. the 20-year historical average is at about 21%,ed red line that you see across there. obama would like to have spending end up at 23%. romney and ryan both want it down at 20%. so there's a clear difference, and they all agree on where it should go. what gets interesting is as you dig into the detail of what gets cut, and you'll see some very, i think, fascinating differences among these guys. so on social security, as you heard president obama say in the last debate, the three guys are actually in the same place. they want to spend the same amount on social security in the next ten years. when you get to medicare, romney and ryan are in the same place, but

attempt to balance the budget. and what ryan and romney are calling is outrageously stupid. what the president is doing is inadequate. >> okay. al? >> good description. nothing partisan about that description. you know, al, the governor brings up a point. i'm not sure that i agree with how he describes the two sides, but i will say that when joe biden -- let's just take these two issues right here. to talk about the stupidity of this campaign. joe biden won't even talk about raising entitlement -- your date of eligibility for entitlements one year despite the fact when fdr set the life expectancy at 62, we're now up, 79, 80, something like that. and you've got three people working for every one person getting these entitlements. and then on the republican side, this $5 trillion tax cut, the numbers don't add up. it doesn't matter what you do. the numbers don't add up. nor does the administration's belief that if you just tax rich guys, you're going to take care of the deficit. it's just -- it's nonsense. >> joe, you're absolutely right. neither side is seriously addressing this.

%-45% in that state. however, mitt romney got on a wave in denver last week and paul ryan has a chance tonight, guys, to continue that momentum, an interesting match-up, we've seen it before of an older, experienced vice president, a younger less tested running mate. we saw it with dick cheney and with john edwards in 2004. dick cheney got the better of that. we saw it with lloyd benson and dan quayle in 1988. it appeared that lloyd benson got the better of that, but of course george bush and dan quayle won the election. i talked to dan quayle yesterday -- or a few days ago, rather, he said he thinks he helped george h.w. bush in that race, even though he got smacked down with that "you're no jack kennedy" line, because he took the fight to michael dukakis and that's the bottom line that you hear from people who have been through these debates, is that the key for vice presidential candidates, guys, is for them to focus their fire not on the counter pa counterpart standing across the stage from them but rather, on the top of the other ticket. you can expect joe biden's going to be very aggressive in
